Forced imbibition in stratified porous media: Fluid dynamics and breakthrough saturation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Imbibition, the displacement of a nonwetting fluid by wetting fluid, plays central role in diverse energy, environmental, and industrial processes. While this process is typically studied homogeneous porous media with uniform permeabilities, many cases, have multiple parallel strata different permeabilities. How such stratification impacts dynamics imbibition, as well saturation after breaks through to end given medium, poorly understood. We address gap knowledge developing an analytical model imbibition medium two strata, combined pore network that explicitly describes crossflow between strata. By numerically solving these models, we examine left breakthrough. find breakthrough minimized when imposed capillary number Ca tuned value Ca$^*$ depends on both structure viscosity ratio fluids. Our results thus provide quantitative guidelines for predicting controlling flow stratified media, implications water remediation, oil/gas recovery, applications requiring moisture management materials.

Analytical and numerical investigations of spontaneous imbibition in porous media
We present semianalytical solutions for cocurrent displacements with some degree of countercurrent flow. The solution assumes a one-dimensional horizontal displacement of two immiscible incompressible fluids with arbitrary viscosities and saturation-dependent relative permeability and capillary pressures. We address the impact of the system length on the degree of countercurrent flow when there...

Saturation dependence of dispersion in porous media.
In this study, we develop a saturation-dependent treatment of dispersion in porous media using concepts from critical path analysis, cluster statistics of percolation, and fractal scaling of percolation clusters. We calculate spatial solute distributions as a function of time and calculate arrival time distributions as a function of system size. Our previous results correctly predict the range ...

The stability of stratified Rivlin-Ericksen fluid in porous medium in the presence of suspended particles and magnetic field has been investigated. Upon application of normal mode technique, the dispersion relation was obtained. The important results obtained in this paper include the instability of non-oscillatory modes and the stability of oscillatory modes. Also, it was found that the system...
متن کاملWave Propagation in Porous Media as a Function of Fluid Saturation
-An experimental investigation is conducted using dynamic photoelasticity and high speed photography to study the wave propagation due to blast loading in porous media as a function of fluid saturation. The porous media have been modeled as a continuous solid containing particular arrays of holes or voids. The study has focused mainly on the effect of the porous structure on transient pulse pro...
